St. Vincent Charity Medical Center partnered with The Legal Aid Society of Cleveland in 2017 to create one of the nation’s first medical-legal partnerships (MLP) to focus on behavioral health and addiction patients in an environment with a psychiatric emergency department and inpatient psychiatric and detoxification units. The MLP team recently had an article published in a prominent national law journal highlighting the impact of an MLP on patients with chronic mental health conditions during the early stages of the pandemic.
The article, "Pandemic Response Through Whole Person Care: The Intersection of Physical and Mental Health and the Law," is authored by medical-legal partnership, behavioral health and internal medicine experts. The authors include St. Vincent Charity MLP team (Jenn Kinsley Smith, Esq. and Liz Lattner, MA), Dr. Allison Kreiner at The Legal Aid Society of Cleveland and Dr. Edward Kilbane, MD, MA, and Dr. Keyvan Ravakhah, MD, MBA.
Through the MLP, Legal Aid attorneys are onsite at St. Vincent Charity to advise and represent patients and to train providers in spotting social determinants of health with potential legal remedies.
