After an extensive national search, the Sisters of Charity Health System has named Michael J. Goar as its new President and CEO, to lead the Cleveland-based Catholic nonprofit in its next era of service. Goar, an accomplished executive with over 25 years driving impact for mission-driven organizations, will assume the role on July 22, 2024, succeeding Jan Murphy, M.S.N., FACHE.
“Michael Goar offers a wealth of experience leading mission-driven organizations working to uplift people and communities,” said Sister Judith Ann Karam, congregational leader of the Sisters of Charity of St. Augustine. “We look forward to welcoming him to Cleveland, Canton and South Carolina, and especially in Northeast Ohio in the Central Neighborhood, as we embark on this next chapter of our long service to the community.”
With more than 25 years of leadership experience in the non-profit and education sectors, Goar most recently served as President and CEO of Catholic Charities of St. Paul-Minneapolis, where he partnered with the board to develop a strategic plan, identify new revenue streams, and establish a $50 million reserve fund. Previously, Goar was CEO for Big Brothers Big Sisters in the Twin Cities, leading a $10 million capital campaign and growing the organization from serving 2,000 to 4,500 children. His accomplished career also includes leadership roles with Minneapolis Public Schools, Boston Public Schools, and Memphis City Schools.
"I am truly honored to have the opportunity to lead this outstanding organization. By capitalizing on the talents of our exceptional employees and partnering with the communities we serve, I am confident we can build upon the Sisters' remarkable legacy for the future,” said Goar. “I am looking forward to July where I can meet with staff and the community to collaborate on our shared vision, so we can continue to uplift the work together."
Goar will take over from Jan Murphy, who has served as President and CEO since 2021, after leading St. Vincent Charity Medical Center for two years, including during the Covid-19 pandemic. She first joined the organization as Vice President of Mission & Ministry in 2018.
The Health System announced Murphy’s retirement in February and launched a national search with the support of WittKiefer, an executive search firm that specializes in recruiting leaders for organizations that work to improve quality of life in the communities they serve. Murphy will provide transitional support to Goar through July 31.
"On behalf of the Board of Directors, I thank Jan Murphy for her exemplary leadership not only as CEO for the last three years, but also for her service since joining the health system six years ago, " said Bob Varley, Board Chair. "She expertly guided us through the COVID-19 pandemic and helped us navigate significant challenges all while keeping our focus on our mission and positioning us for the future.”
